Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
