Rob Edwards along with O'Neil represent the early names under consideration to succeed the former manager as manager of Wolves.
The previous coach was sacked on Sunday following the squad's ten-game without a victory start to the top-flight season.
And both candidates - each of whom have historic associations to the team - are among the names to be considered by the club ownership.
The manager is currently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a potential obstacle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.
However the former Luton head coach - who made over a century of appearances for the club during his playing career - is considered a strong candidate for the position.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys support from the club directors as they begin the process of hiring a new head coach.
Gary O'Neil is additionally emerging as a unexpected contender, even though he would be a surprising choice given he was sacked by the club in December last year.
The ex- West Ham player is out of work meaning the club would not need to provide any buyout fee.
