A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
