Three members of law enforcement perished and more than a dozen others got wounded in an apparently deliberate detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The detonation occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were arrested at the scene and another man who ran away subsequent to the incident was apprehended soon after. Each of them have been taken to hospital.

The detonation could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the area showed the building left as a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to displace the three family members in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The head of the Veneto region, President Zaia, said the property was subject to an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the property owners.

Mediators had been assigned to engage the family members who had locked themselves into the house. When the police arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member caused the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Claudio Papagno told news outlets.

A gas canister had been set off, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also located at the residence, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the incident consisted of 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a firefighter.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had was without power.

The official thought the blast had happened on a story above the access point and informed journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the explosion, he mentioned personnel had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors stated to reporters, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in honoring the three men who had died in the line of duty.
