The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
